AVON, Conn. — October 25, 2011 — Magellan Health Services (NASDAQ: MGLN) and its nearly 5,000 employees nationwide are joining forces with Share Our Strength to make sure every child in America gets the healthy food they need to thrive. Magellan announced it has become an official sponsor of the Florida Partnership to End Childhood Hunger, an initiative of Florida Impact and Share Our Strength. The Florida Partnership, part of Share Our Strength’s national No Kid Hungry® Campaign, is the vehicle through which many private and public organizations across the state work strategically and in concert to end childhood hunger in Florida. Magellan will also support Share Our Strength in a number of other initiatives such as the No Kid Hungry Pledge and the Great American Bake Sale® to further the organization’s mission.
“Proper nutrition is essential for children to learn, grow and thrive. The implications of child hunger are far-reaching, including health complications, self-esteem issues, poor performance in school and even obesity,” said Karen S. Rohan, president of Magellan. “As a specialty health care company, with specific expertise in behavioral health and frequent interaction with the Medicaid population, we see first hand the real struggle some families endure. Together, with the support of our employees and communities-at-large, we are honored to be working with Share Our Strength to end childhood hunger by 2015.”
Share Our Strength is leading a movement to ensure that every child in America gets the food they need everyday. The organization’s five-year plan includes creating public-private partnerships to identify and fill gaps in services for children facing hunger, improving community food security, educating struggling families about how to prepare nutritious meals, mobilizing Americans to support the country’s most vulnerable children, and ensuring families know about the food and nutrition programs that can help them in times of need.
“Our focus is on long-term change, the difference between feeding a child today and making sure no child in the U.S. ever goes hungry again,” said Bill Shore, chairman and CEO of Share Our Strength. “We greatly appreciate supporters like Magellan Health Services, who help us ensure that millions of at-risk children get the nutritious food they need, where they live, learn and play.”
Pledge to End Childhood Hunger
To help spread awareness and involve employees, customers, business partners and the community in this endeavor, Magellan has joined the No Kid Hungry Pledge Campaign, which offers a variety of ways for everyone to help end childhood hunger. Visitors to www.NoKidHungry.com/Magellan can pledge their support for the cause, encourage others to take the pledge, donate to Share Our Strength and learn more about how to get involved or serve as an advocate in the community.
“Anyone can join the movement to end childhood hunger, with whatever time or resources they’re able to give,” said Rohan. “Taking the pledge is the important first step to help make a difference for children and families in need.”
Baking for a Cause
Magellan will also join The Great American Bake Sale, Share Our Strength’s national event that has raised more than $6 million to support childhood hunger issues. Throughout the fall, Magellan will mobilize their employees and partners to host community bake sales in Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, with all proceeds supporting Share Our Strength. In addition, many of Magellan’s office locations will participate by hosting internal bake sales to also benefit Share Our Strength.
